App Case Study
Advanced Digital Wellbeing App
Digital wellbeing, owned by you

Overview
Boundaries is an advanced digital wellbeing application. It gives users call and message blocking, app usage tracking, and screen-time management.
Boundaries is a digital wellbeing app. It is for people who found the built in screen time tools too easy to talk themselves out of. It filters calls and messages, tracks app usage honestly, and holds the schedules a user sets for themselves.
The challenge
Existing screen-time apps were too limited. They lacked granular control, and users wanting to override restrictions bypassed them easily.
Most screen time tools fail in the same place. They are configurable enough to feel serious, and permissive enough to be bypassed in three taps. So the user overrides them in exactly the moment the tool was meant to help. The design problem is not measurement. It is holding a decision made in a calmer moment.
What we built
Built a native mobile app with system-level call/message filtering, intelligent usage analytics, and configurable wellbeing schedules.
Filtering happens at the system level rather than inside the app, so it holds rather than politely suggests. Usage analytics were built to be accurate rather than flattering. A wellbeing tool that softens its own numbers is worthless. Schedules are configured in advance. They are deliberately harder to unpick in the moment than they were to set.
- System level call and message filtering
- App usage tracking and analytics
- Wellbeing schedules configured ahead of time
- Granular per contact and per app rules
- Native mobile client

Technology used
We are technology agnostic by policy. This is a record of what Boundaries required, not a house standard.
Services behind this project
Boundaries drew on 3 services from our catalogue, matched to what an app project like this actually needed.
App development
Mobile and operational applications where records change and permissions matter. The edge cases decide whether the software survives a real workday.
Explore app development →Custom software development
Bespoke systems for teams with a very specific requirement. An off the shelf product would force them to change how they work.
Explore custom software →Business process optimisation
Mapping and redesigning the process before it is automated. Software built on a broken workflow simply makes the wrong thing faster.
Explore process work →This work sits inside our Automate solution, for teams facing the same problem.

Boundaries FAQs
Built in tools are designed to be easy to override. That is reasonable for a platform default, and useless for someone actively trying to change a habit. Boundaries filters at the system level. It makes the override deliberate rather than reflexive.
Calls and messages by contact rule, and app access by schedule. The user sets the rules in advance. The point is that they hold when attention is at its weakest.
Usage analytics exist to show the user their own patterns accurately. A wellbeing product that flatters its user is not doing the job it was installed to do.
